Health Insurance
- You are a citizen of an EU/EEA state: You can use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which you can obtain from your home country's health system. As long as it is valid for the entire academic year, all health fees incurred will be paid for during the entire period of your studies in France.
- You are a citizen of a non-EU/EEA state: In preparation for your arrival in France for your studies and after your enrolment with Cnam-Enjmin, you must register for the French Social Security on the dedicated Améli website which is part of the Assurance Maladie (free registration). When you arrive in France, you will receive a message asking you to log onto the site in order to complete the steps linked to your registration for the Assurance Maladie.
You will need to provide the following documents (in digital format):
- Proof of ID (passport)
- Birth certificate
- A valid Student Visa
You will be given a Social Security Number and a certificate granting you temporary rights to healthcare. If you have a long-stay visa (VLS-TS), you will then receive a permanent Social Security Number which will allow you to order your carte Vitale (Health card) and create your ameli.fr account (to manage refunds linked to health care)
We advise you to also take out additional health insurance (between €10 and €45 per month depending on your health needs). This additional insurance means that your health fees will be entirely covered, which is not always the case with just the French Social Security.

Medical Appointments
If you need to see a doctor (general or specialist), you can make an appointment online on the Doctolib platform. You can filter your search by which language(s) the doctor speaks. Do not forget to take your carte Vitale (Health card) if you have it already or ask for a feuille de soins (an invoice for medical treatment). You can send this document to the Assurance Maladie and be refunded the fees you paid upfront. If you have additional medical insurance, the entirety of your medical fees may be covered.
When you make an appointment, try and look for doctors who state they are conventionnés en secteur 1 as you will receive a higher refund of the medical fees. Doctors who state they are secteur 2 or secteur 3 apply their own tariffs and you will have to pay yourself for any extra fees.
An appointment with a GP (General Practitioner)/Family Doctor who is conventionné en secteur 1 costs €30, €19 of which is refunded by Assurance Maladie (thanks to your carte Vitale or the feuille de soins).
Mental Health
If you are feeling anxious or unease, you can get in contact with a health professional, a member of staff at Cnam-Enjmin or a friend.
Free mental health support appointments for students are offered by Magelis Creative Hub with the support from the Crous (Centre régional des œuvres universitaires et scolaires).
The Student Mental Health Scheme created by the French government allows students to benefit from 12 sessions paid for by the French Social Security over the course of an academic year. Students do not need to advance any money. The updated list of psychologists taking part in the scheme is available here. Please note that some psychologists may not be able to provide sessions in English. Check the list carefully.
Nightline offers a listening service (via chat or phone) for support or information, which is free, confidential and available in English. Trained volunteers who are students themselves are available to offer a kind and attentive ear. The “Nightline France" website offers a First Aid Kit: a collection of practical advice and tools to help you work through stressful periods, isolation and other difficulties.
