Angoulême, a bustling creative town
Known as the ‘Balcony to Southwestern France’, Angoulême is located in the Charente Department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. The town is known as the world capital for all things comic strips, which has led to it being recognised as a UNESCO Creative Town in the literature category. It is an averaged-sized town with nearly 110,000 inhabitants.
The town beats to the rhythm of its many different events organised throughout the year: Angoulême International Comics Festival (literature, January), Festival Musiques Métisses (music, June), French-Speaking Film Festival (cinema, August), Circuit des remparts (car race, September), les Gastronomades (cookery, November)…
Angoulême has much to offer in terms of culture: The Comic Strip Museum (Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l’image), Angoulême Theatre, La Nef (hall for modern music), Alpha Library, Conservatory for Music, Dance and Theatre (Conservatoire Gabriel Fauré), the Reional Fund for Contemporary Art (Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain)…
Angoulême has good transport links by high-speed TGV trains – just 1 hour 50 minutes to Paris and 35 minutes to Bordeaux – and is not far from the Atlantic coast – 100km from Royan and 120km from La Rochelle. The Angoumoisines et Angoumoisins (inhabitants of Angoulême) enjoy a pleasant and tranquil way of life, appreciating the town’s cultural diversity and dynamism, reasonable housing prices and mild climate.
A wide array of creative talents call Angoulême home. Employees of creative media companies, multimedia artists, comic strip authors, writers’ collectives and students of Magelis Creative Campus live and work together here. This mixing means that there is an environment conducive to creativity, exchange, research and innovation.
Cnam-Enjmin is also supported by the Crous (Centre régional des œuvres universitaires et scolaires). It is a regionally based, yet centralised, administrative body, which ensures students have decent living conditions to help them succeed in their studies. They look after major aspects of student life, including finance (scholarships), health, university restaurants and student accommodation.
Crous University Restaurant (Resto U' le Nil)
Cnam-Enjmin's Nil Building hosts once of the three university canteens in Angoulême managed by Crous (Centre régional des œuvres universitaires et scolaires), Resto U' le Nil.
It is open for lunch from Monday to Friday from 11:45am to 1:30pm. It is closed for dinner and at weekends.
Resto U' le Nil works on a "Points Menu" system. 6 points equal €3.30 for students, or €1 for students with grants or those who are in a delicate financial situation (link in French). A meal is equal to a minimum of 6 points, with each additional point costing €0.55. Each student can what they want to eat.
- Starters: between 1 and 2 points
- Main meal (including vegetarian): 4, 5 or 6 points
- Cheese and dairy products: 1 or 2 points
- Desserts: 1 or 2 points
Payments are made with Izly, a digital wallet which students top up. It is available on their student card or on the mobile app.
